NEW YORK – City National Bank announced today that it has opened its second ground-floor banking office in Manhattan this year, located in its New York headquarters building at the corner of Park Avenue and 54th Street.
The new two-story branch, plus two more floors of bankers, expands City National’s total square footage in the newly refurbished 400 Park Avenue building to nearly 44,000 square feet, enlarging its significant presence in Midtown. The branch continues City National’s steady expansion in New York, which began in 2002. A total of 70 colleagues will be located in the new branch as well as in other offices in the building, bringing the number of City National colleagues in New York City to more than 200, including those at its other new branch office and Entertainment Division at 6th and 44th and those colleagues at City National Rochdale Investment Management in the historic General Electric building on Lexington Avenue. The new branch will supplement the bank’s longstanding private and business banking as well as wealth management services that have been and remain available at 400 Park.
“With this large new branch on Park Avenue, we are expanding our accessibility and visibility in New York City, as well as our commitment and capabilities, to provide clients with an even greater range of City National’s remarkable resources, relationship banking and wealth management,” said Russell Goldsmith, chairman and chief executive officer of City National Bank. “City National has been successfully growing in Manhattan for over a decade, serving a growing number of the city’s entrepreneurs, professionals, small and mid-sized businesses, entertainment and sports industry professionals, as well as investors and their families. This new branch is designed to deliver the personal service and client-friendly banking experience City National is known for and to showcase the bank’s state-of-the-art technology for its clients.”
The 21-story 400 Park Avenue office building was designed in 1955 by the important New York firm of Emery Roth & Sons for City Bank Farmers Trust. The building is part of a critical period in New York City history - the post-World War II wave of office construction that transformed Park Avenue into the architectural icon of American corporate Modernism. The building is currently in the midst of a major renovation that is expected to be complete in 2014.
The dramatic new two-story entrance and contemporary design of the completely remodeled branch (formerly Syms clothing store) significantly improves a key corner across from the Lever House. Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (BCJ), the architects who designed the City National space, also designed the major Apple Stores in New York and around the country, Pixar Animation headquarters, the Bill and Melinda Gates residence and Seattle City Hall.
“Working closely with BCJ, we were able to create a very dramatic two-story entry experience on the corner of Park and 54th,” said Harry Topping, senior vice president of corporate premises for City National Bank. “This highly visible new branch will anchor the corner, providing dramatic brand identity for City National in this iconic district, surrounded by such landmark Modernist structures as the Seagram Building and Lever House.”
Above the branch, services on the second and seventh floors include private banking, residential lending, entertainment and wealth management through City National Rochdale and Convergent Wealth Advisors, corporate banking, treasury finance and equipment leasing. The branch meets LEED requirements and offers 24-hour ATM and night deposit services.
Manager Mark Gusinov will lead a core banking team.
